Korean Streetfood
Topokki
As one of the most popular street foods in Korea across all age groups, topokki can be divided into two types – spicy bunsik topokki made with gochujang (red pepper paste) and gungjung (royal) topokki made with ganjang (soy sauce).

Spicy topokki which is the common type of topokki is made by simmering ddeok (rice cake) in a spicy sauce made of gochujang, green onion, garlic, and sugar (or starch syrup). One can also add other ingredients including boiled eggs and sliced fish cakes.

Gungjung topokki was the type of topokki eaten in palaces, which was made by stir-frying ddeok and beef marinated in soy sauce. So it was not spicy and is now called gungjungsik topokki.

Sundae
Sundae, commonly available as street food or at buksikjip, is made by stuffing pig’s intestines with dangmyeon (clear noodles) and pigs’ blood and steaming them. In Busan, Ulsan and some parts of South Gyeongsang Province, sundae is eaten with makjang (a type of sauce) but in most parts of Korea sundae is eaten with salt and other pig parts like liver or lung.

It can be categorized into Ojingeo sundae (Squid sundae) and chapssal sundae (glutinous rice sundae) depending on ingredients used; and Byeongcheon sundae and Abai sundae depending on the region in which it is produced.

Gunbam
Gunbam is made by roasting chestnuts and peeling off the skin, then roasting again on pebbles. Chestnuts roasted this way are soft inside and crusty outside. It is the best street food in the winter season.

Dakggochi

Hatba
Hatba is made by shaping finely chopped fish and vegetables, then frying it. It is available as street food, but can also be commonly found at hyugaeso on highways. It can be enjoyed with ketchup, mustard, or chili sauce.

Hotteok
Hotteok, white pancake stuffed with a sweet stuffing, is widely enjoyed during the winter season. It was common to use brown sugar but nowadays flour and various types of nuts are added to the filling.

Normally, hotteok is white in color but sometimes green tea is added to the dough to make green tea hotteok.

Bungeobbang
Bungeobbang, a widely popular street snack, is goldfish-shaped stuffed pastry filled with red beans. Recently, sweet potatoes or cream are also being used as fillings instead of red beans.

Hotdog
Unlike the American-style hotdogs, Korean hotdogs are sausages on chopsticks covered in dough and fried. Sugar or ketchup and mustard are put on top to give more flavor.

Twigim
